Our Approach to Assessment

The Early Years classrooms at Edge Grove are where we have the privilege of nurturing the dynamic approach to learning which characterises our school. We recognise that small children are all on an individual learning journey, influenced by their age and stage of development and this is reflected in our approach to 4+ Assessment.

If we were to set tasks which, for example, asked the children to count to 20, write their names or use scissors we would be overlooking all the other character attributes which demonstrate the potential to thrive at Edge Grove; we are clear that this is not our approach. As experienced professionals, we are able to identify key developmental milestones that tell us that children arrive in Reception ready to engage in and benefit from early learning experiences that best promote the child’s success.

Our observed assessment milestones include:

  1. Speech and Language – can the child communicate simple ideas and needs effectively?
  2. Can the child listen attentively and follow simple instructions?
  3. Does the child play purposefully and sustain attention?
  4. Does the child show awe and wonder when listening to a story?
  5. How are fine and gross motor skills developing?

Our virtual 4+ Assessment

In order to comply with Government guidelines for schools during Covid-19, we have had to adapt our 4+ Assessment for 2021 entry. We are excited to introduce our new ‘virtual 4+ Assessment’ which will enable us to virtually meet and assess your child.

Although you have already registered your child with Edge Grove it is essential that you complete the form below if you would like your child to be considered for a place at Edge Grove. Without submitting this form we will not be able to consider your child’s application.
