Governors

  • Mrs Jean Scott - Chair of Board of Governors
    Jean has been a Governor since 2011 and Chair of the Board of Governors since July 2014. She is a graduate of Glasgow University and has a PGCE from the Institute of Education, London. She taught Biology in state Grammar and Comprehensive schools, and was a member of the Cambridge University Biological Sciences Committee. She has fifteen years of experience as Headmistress at St George's School for Girls in Edinburgh and at South Hampstead High School GDST. She has trained as an ISI Inspector. Since retiring she was Chair of the Independent Schools Council from 2001-06. She is currently a Governor of Haileybury College and Chair of its Education Committee. 

  • Mr Howard Clayden - Chair of the Finance Committee, Current Parent
    Howard has been the Chief Financial Officer for the EMEA region for global PR agency Burson-Marsteller (part of WPP group) since 2009. He previously worked for Remy Martin and KPMG and is a qualified Chartered Accountant with more than 20 years of commercial experience. Howard is a current parent with two children at Edge Grove. His main hobbies include virtually all forms of sport and horseracing and he is a lifelong West Ham fan!

  • Ms Carole Edmond - Current Parent, Boarding Governor
    Carole is the former Managing Director for Bright Horizons which operates in the early education, childcare and work/life services sector. Carole transformed the business to become the one of the largest multi-site quality brands in both the B2B and B2C markets in the UK & Ireland. Leading more than 6,000 people, working across 200 locations, Carole led the company through 3 major cycles of acquisitive and organic growth from 2009-2015. During the height of the economic downturn, she doubled the footprint of the portfolio across the UK, and developed strategic relationships with Corporates, Public Sector employers and several Universities including University of Oxford for their workplace childcare services. Her work has influenced government on strategy, policy and regulation in early education. Carole built a unique leadership ethos and employee culture and as a result the business was recognised as a ‘Great Place to Work’, ranked #7 in UK & #14 in Europe in 2015. She led it to become the first early education company to win ‘Education Business of the Year’ in 2013. As a working mum with a young daughter,  who is at Edge Grove, she is a role model to integrating work and life during significant phases of business growth and supporting women in the workplace returning from maternity leave. Carole left corporate life earlier this year and is currently on a career break studying on a Senior Executive Professional Doctorate programme which she will complete in 2016. Since moving from her executive role she recently completed a stand-up comedy programme and performed in front of a live audience. We now know where her daughter gets her sense of humour from! Carole has been a Governor at Edge Grove for over 4 years and is a member of the Finance Committee.

  • Ms Amanda Godfrey - Executive Headteacher (Spiral Academies Trust), Education Committee
    Amanda joined the governors in January 2015, she has 19 years of experience as a headteacher and is now Executive Headteacher of Spiral Academies Trust. She began her teaching career in London before moving to Hertfordshire in 1996, since then she has led and improved three primary schools. As a National Leader of Education (NLE) she has a deep understanding of schools as complex organisations and works with a variety of schools in Hertfordshire to provide support, training and leadership advice. Amanda has chaired the St Albans consortium of headteachers for over ten years and is an executive member of the Hertfordshire Primary Heads Forum. She has led a number of county school improvement initiatives and works closely with Hertfordshire local authority. Amanda is also a director of Herts for Learning, an innovative school improvement company, and chair of the Remuneration Committee. She has a son studying biomedical science and a daughter studying A levels.

  • Mr Paul Kendall - Vice Chair of Governors, Past Parent, Past Pupil
    Paul has been a Governor since 2010. He is Managing Director of Coupers, a Hyundai and Seat dealer that has been operating in St Albans since 1933. Paul is an Edge Grove Old Boy (1970 to 1976) and has two daughters Emma and Sophie who attended Edge Grove from 2000 to 2009 and are now both at Princess Helena College Hitchin. He is married to Gerdien and lives in St Albans. He plays and coaches Eton Fives at Aldenham but loves all kinds of sport, especially cricket at Lords.

  • Dr Jill Maddison - Past Parent
    A native of Sydney, Australia and a graduate of the University of Sydney, Jill moved with her family to the UK in April 2001. She is a veterinarian specialising in small animal medicine, pharmacology and veterinary education. Currently Director of Professional Development, Extramural Studies and General Practice at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), she is actively involved in undergraduate teaching of veterinary and veterinary nursing students and continuing professional development for veterinarians in the UK and around the world. Jill has published over 60 refereed papers in veterinary and medical journals and lectures extensively around the world on clinical problem solving, small animal internal medicine and clinical pharmacology. Jill was co-chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the World Small Animal Veterinary Association Congress held in Sydney in 2007 and is coordinator for the clinical CPD streams at The London Vet Show. She is also the chair of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association Continuing Education Committee. To keep in touch with the realities of private general practice she consults at a local veterinary practice and at the RVC’s first opinion practice, the Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital. Jill is a past parent of Edge Grove.

  • Mr Charles Lilley - Past Pupil
    Charles joined the governing body in 2013. He is an in-house solicitor at Steria, the IT and Business Process outsourcing service provider, where he has worked for the past fourteen years. Previously he was a solicitor in the chemical industry at Courtaulds. He is married to Maarit and lives in Chiswick. They have a daughter who attends The Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton and a son who attends Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith. Charles is an Edge Grove Old Boy (1970-1976) and attended St Christopher's (the predecessor to Hart House) before that, Haileybury afterwards and went on to read Law at Newcastle University. He has a particular enthusiasm for sport, playing all sports through school, rugby through University and for a few years after that, and golf and tennis in more recent years. He is a keen spectator whenever he has the opportunity and enjoys watching his children playing rugby and lacrosse for their schools.

  • Mr Trefor Llewellyn - Retired Bursar (Bradfield College)
    Trefor has been a Governor since 2014. He was Bursar of Bradfield College for eight years until his retirement in August 2014. He has been since 2010, and continues to be, Honorary Treasurer and on the Executive Committee of the Boarding Schools Association. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales. Before becoming a Bursar, he was finance director of companies in a variety of industries, ranging from IT, retail, financial services through to an international manufacturing business. He read history at Cardiff University, where he gained a BA degree with First Class Honours. He is a governor at Theale Green School, an Academy sponsored by Bradfield College, and is also a governor on the Interim Executive Board of Bradfield Primary School.

  • Mr Andrew Robson - Chair of the Estates Committee, Past Pupil
    Andrew has been a Governor since 2012. He is a former pupil of St Christopher’s (the predecessor to Hart House), Edge Grove, Haileybury and the Royal Agricultural College. He is presently Senior Partner of Sidleys Chartered Surveyors of Oxford and is personally responsible for managing a variety of clients’ property interests in agriculture, residential, commercial, retail and education. His firm particularly specialises in the modernisation and alteration of listed educational buildings. Andrew is married and has two sons in further education. He is a keen cricketer, a sometime golfer, a lifelong Arsenal fan and has a particular fondness for good food.

  • Mr David Williams - Finance Committee, Former Pupil, Retired School Bursar (Charterhouse)
    David spent two years as a pupil at Edge Grove, prior to completing his education at Glasgow Academy and Nottingham University. David is an experienced bursar who spent 8 years at Charterhouse, and is now a Consultant Bursar, and founder of BursarSearch.  He is a chartered accountant. His aptitude is underpinned   by his background working in the computer and construction industries as a finance director, and managing director. His career took him on a number of international assignments, including living in Ireland and Finland, as well as visiting the Far East and USA regularly. However Heathrow airport lost its attraction every Monday morning and becoming a bursar sounded interesting.   Expecting the role to be a gentle pre retirement job he was disabused of that within a week. During 2015/16 he has been engaged at 16 schools providing recruitment, interim and strategic advice. He sees the critical importance of schools being commercial as well as providing an excellent education. David is also a member of the Council of Royal Holloway College.

  • Mr Jeremy Stevens - Past Parent
    Jeremy has been a Governor since 2014. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors with over 35 years experience of the property industry. He is joint owner and Managing Director of Warrant Investments Plc a property investment company based in Watford specialising in the commercial, residential and leisure property sectors. As a property owner, Jeremy has a client’s perspective of property and legal issues and will be able to provide guidance with regard to Estate and New School developments. Born in Enfield and having lived most of his life in North London, in 2007 the family moved to Chalfont St Giles. He is married to Lesley, an Interior Designer and has twin sons William and Christian who both attended Edge Grove. William was Head Boy in 2014. Jeremy is a keen supporter of England and West Ham United and enjoys all sports, particularly cricket, football and ski-ing. He is a member of Radlett Cricket Club and a qualified Level 1 Umpire. Further interests include collecting antiques, British black and white films and walking the family dog.

  • Dr Sue Whiting - Past Parent
    Sue, a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser, now works as a writer and independent memory consultant.  She is a Grand Master of Memory and five times (1994 -1998) Women’s World Memory champion, with more than 20 years’ experience in the field of memory at all levels and age groups. Sue lectures on memory, and coaches clients in practical memory techniques and strategies to solve memory and learning problems.  With her scientific background (the Dr refers to a D. Phil in Astrophysics from Oxford University) she naturally keeps up to date with developments in neuroscience and is currently studying for an MSc in Educational Neuroscience at London University. Other interests include the impact of diet, stress and lifestyle on mental abilities. Sue is a past parent of Edge Grove: her youngest daughter, in the second year of intake of girls at the school, is currently studying for a PhD in organic chemistry.

  • Lucy Dexter     
    Lucy has been working as a Teacher of Chemistry at Haileybury for the last 12 years following completion of her PhD in Physical Chemistry. She graduated from York University with a First Class Honours degree in Chemistry in 2002 and subsequently worked with Warwick University in combination with Unilever on her doctoral research into nanoscale limescale growth and dissolution, contributing to the formulation and development of Domestos bleach products. During her time at Haileybury, Lucy has held the position of Head of PHSE and spent 7 years as a boarding Housemistress, with overall care and responsibility for 60 girls. She is currently Head of Wellbeing and has particular interest in teenage mental health awareness and safeguarding. She is also an examiner for CIE International A Level. Lucy is getting married to Dale (Head of Chemistry at Haileybury) in August and they enjoy spending time in the holidays in Woodbridge, Suffolk, with their dog Bruce. 

  • Mrs Frances King - CEO of the Mill Hill Foundation, Education Committee 
    Frances was appointed as CEO of the Mill Hill School Foundation in January 2016. Prior to this she was Director of College Alpin International Beau Soleil, an international co-educational boarding school located in the Swiss Alps. Her previous headships included Roedean, and Heathfield School, both boarding schools in the UK. Before her move into educational management, Frances taught Religious Studies, following a degree in Theology from the University of Oxford. She continued her studies with an MA course in Philosophy and Ethics (Heythrop College, University of London) and later an MBA in Global Educational Leadership (University of Hull). As well as Switzerland, Frances has lived in countries as diverse as Pakistan, India, Australia, Kenya, Canada and Israel; as a result she has a deep interest in the world’s diverse cultures and enjoys travel. She is a member of the Central Council for the Royal Overseas League in London.
