The Lower School at Edge Grove extends the Pre Prep foundation by challenging pupils in the classroom, on the sports field or through the Creative Arts.

We continue to develop children as independent learners, giving individuals a balance of support, challenge and extension, beyond the National Curriculum.

Lower School teachers are experienced with all types of learners; tuned into challenging individuals within small teaching groups.

In Years 3 and 4 we have three classes of 18-20 children and two learning assistants who offer both in class support during English, maths, science and topic and extra intervention groups throughout the day. As we set from Year 3 into three groups for both maths and English, the children are well supported in the lower and middle sets by the teacher and learning assistant. The lower sets will also often have a smaller amount of children in order to be able to offer a more supportive and differentiated teaching style to suit the needs of the children.

A half termly topic underpinning learning enables children to group knowledge and skills, to become ‘thinkers’ and problem solvers.

Learning is enriched through an array of off-site trips and visitors to the school (including parents). In the summer we offer an Expedition Week when the children experience a few nights away and fun, team-building activities during the day.

Children engage in a variety of topic related days where external companies present interactive learning opportunities to extend what we are covering in the classroom, such as Viking Day, Roman Day, Egyptian Day, Aquarium Trip, Rock and Soil Workshop, Planetarium and a visit to Mountfitchet Castle.

Some parents consider our flexi or weekly boarding options at this stage. Most children take advantage of the range of activities and structured support with homework on offer as part of the after-school activities programme until 6.00pm.

We take pride in the huge choice we offer our parents once their children enter the Lower School. Staggered pick up between 4.00pm and 6.00pm, activity choices during the week, supported prep – these are all directed by a superbly dedicated team of staff who above all genuinely care for individuals.

I would be delighted to meet you and show you around our thriving Lower School community.

Mrs Samantha Robinson, Head of Lower School (Years 3 and 4)
