This Week at Edge Grove

Friday 17th October 2025

Below you will find this week’s newsletter organised into drop-down menus:

Junior Department News

Our first half-term has come to an end, and it has been wonderful getting to know so many of you. Leading the Edge Grove Junior Department family is something I consider to be a treasured gift.

This week has been full of special moments. First, we celebrated our Diwali assembly. We are so fortunate to be part of such a wonderfully diverse community, and it was a joy to welcome our Diwali families to share this special occasion with us. Thank you to all the families who supported this.

Our Harvest Festival was another particularly meaningful occasion, not only for what it represents in a world where many are less fortunate than ourselves, but also because it marked the first time all our Junior Department children joined the rest of the school for a whole-school event. Nursery and Reception did a wonderful job listening carefully to the important messages shared, and they especially enjoyed the Seniors’ lively “word presentation,” complete with moving letters.

We are also very proud of our prep-school heritage, and it was a real treat to collaborate with The Seniors during our autumnal craft activities this week. Leaves with legs, googly eyes, and arms were the order of the day, and the creativity on display was fantastic. A very big thank you to Miss Senior, the Senior pupils, and the Year 2 team for organising such an engaging learning experience.

Finally, a very big well done to all the children for their fantastic participation in cross country! Mrs Wynne may have lost her voice from all the cheering, and her legs are a little tired too, but it was certainly worth it. Wishing everyone a restful and well-deserved half-term break.

Mrs Wynne
Assistant Head (Junior)

Nursery

The nursery children had a wonderful week filled with joy and celebration as we marked both Diwali and the Harvest Festival. The children explored the vibrant traditions of Diwali, enjoying stories, crafts, and lights, while also learning about the importance of harvest time. We brought our story Pumpkin Soup to life by making our very own delicious pumpkin soup together, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. To finish off the week, we wrapped up with a delightful pumpkin walk, full of smiles and excitement. Wishing all our families a restful and happy half term!

Reception News

This week in Reception, we’ve been reflecting on our wonderful farm visit last week. In Literacy, we were introduced to adjectives as “describing words” and had lots of fun choosing words to match our favourite farm animals. From woolly sheep to soft bunnies and muddy pigs, the children showed great creativity. In Maths, we focused on the concept of one more and one less, using objects and number lines to help us. We also explored the idea that something looking bigger doesn’t always mean it has more inside, an important step in developing early reasoning skills! We’ve also been celebrating special festivals this week. For Diwali, the festival of light, the children created beautiful Rangoli patterns using bright colours and experimented with Mehndi designs on hand templates. We talked about how Diwali is celebrated and the story behind it. We also celebrated Harvest by making our own harvest baskets, cutting and sticking fruits and vegetables, and talking about sharing and being thankful for the food we have.

Year 1 News

This week in Year 1, we have celebrated Diwali. The children have completed beautiful rangoli patterns and learnt about the story of Rama and Sita. We wish all of those families celebrating a Happy Diwali! The children have been focusing on part-whole models in Maths and finding facts to match. The children have enjoyed looking at 8 fact families and have grown in confidence across the week. We have also been looking at Maths vocabulary for ‘addition’ and ‘subtraction’. In English this week, we have been looking at sentence structure, with a particular focus on capital letters, full stops and question marks. The children loved being teachers and “fixing” the sentences! Friday afternoon’s cross-country event was an exciting highlight for everyone involved! The atmosphere was electric as both pupils and teachers hit the course, some staff were just as eager as the children! With energy levels soaring and a strong sense of competition in the air, every student gave it their all. We wish you all a restful half term. Well done to Year 1 for their hard work this half term!

Year 2 News

Year 2 staff and pupils continue to be inspired by the wonderful presentations coming in for Black History Month. From PowerPoints and recordings to posters and fact files, the children have clearly put a great deal of effort and thought into their work. They have been sharing their knowledge about influential figures such as Rosa Parks, Pelé, Shirley Bassey, Serena Williams, and Betty Campbell, to name just a few. The presentations have been delivered with confidence and flair, captivating their audiences, and we can’t wait to be dazzled by those still to come!

Friday afternoon’s cross-country event was a thrilling highlight for all! Excitement was in the air as pupils and teachers alike took to the course, with some staff just as enthusiastic as the children. The energy, adrenaline, and competitive spirit were sky-high, and every child gave their best. Year 2 would like to send a huge thank you to Mr Aitchison and his team for the excellent organisation and all the hard work behind the scenes to make the event such a success.

And finally, yes, you read that right, Christmas preparations are already underway! The children have been enthusiastically designing their Christmas card artwork, ready to be printed onto a variety of items, (grandparents, get ready!). Unsurprisingly, this has sparked the question of the week—asked at least a dozen times this week: “When will it be Christmas?” (We’re counting down too—but maybe let’s get through Bonfire Night first Year 2!)

Middle Department News

We ended the half term with two fantastic assemblies. The first was on Diwali, beautifully led by the children and Mrs Parmar. The children spoke with confidence and enthusiasm, sharing the story and traditions of Diwali so thoughtfully. It was a lovely way to celebrate the Festival of Light and to reflect on the themes of kindness and togetherness. Our Harvest assembly was equally special, giving us the opportunity to come together as a community to express gratitude and to think about helping others. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed — your generosity is so appreciated.

It has been a fabulous half term filled with learning, laughter, and so many wonderful achievements across the school. The children have worked incredibly hard and should be very proud of all they have accomplished. We wish all our families a restful and happy half term break — enjoy the time together, and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for more exciting learning next half term.

Mrs Tora Hodge
Deputy Head (Academic)

Year 3 – Miss Kyriacou, Miss Corin, Miss Lundrigan

As the end of the half term approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on what a busy, fun, and exciting half term it has been. We are grateful for your continued support and look forward to sharing more of our highlights from our learning journey.

This Week’s Highlights:

In maths, our focus has been on addition and exchanging three and two digit numbers. The children have shown incredible growth in their ability to tackle these challenges with confidence.

In English, we have been diving deeper into the book “The Wild Robot,” specifically working on understanding paragraphs and using expanded noun phrases to enhance our writing. It’s been wonderful to see the children’s creativity flourish!

Our exploration of mountains has continued with a special focus on Mount Everest. The curiosity and enthusiasm from the children have been infectious, as we discover more about this magnificent mountain. We continued our adventure into the Stone Age, exploring how the people of that era adapted to survive. The children have been fascinated by their innovative ways of living.

We hope you and your families have a restful half term break. It’s a perfect time to relax and enjoy some well-deserved rest after a period of hard work. Thank you once again for your continued support and partnership. We look forward to welcoming the children back to school for more adventures and learning in the new term.

Year 4 – Mrs Futerill, Mrs Warnes

This week we enjoyed some practical science as we continued our topic of solids, gases and liquids. Take a look at some of the photos below…

Year 5 – Mr Russell and Mrs O’Brien

It has been a truly fantastic final week of the half term in Year 5. The children have made us so proud with their energy and enthusiasm during their final few days and we have thoroughly enjoyed being with them.

Year 5 had a fantastic time on their trip to Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village! The children stepped back in time to explore a real-life motte and bailey castle, learning how these early fortifications were built and defended. They discovered what daily life was like in a Norman village, gaining insight into medieval jobs, homes, and traditions. Highlights of the day included having fun in the stocks, launching mock cannonballs, trying their hand at archery, and dressing up as Norman soldiers. It was a hands-on, exciting way to bring history to life! A big thank you must go to Mrs. Nichols for arranging the trip!

The Year 5 showcase was truly outstanding. We are still in shock over how the children were able to perform to such a high standard after only 5-6 weeks of practise! Mrs Allen and Mr Evans have again worked their magic and brought such an energetic show to life! The smiles on the children’s faces told you everything you needed to know about how much Year 5 enjoyed putting this together. I know we will be spending a lot of our half term with the songs in our heads and maybe even an Edge Grove Mambo routine!

A big thank you to all of you for your support this half term. On behalf of Mrs. O’Brien and myself, we really appreciate how you have helped us to settle the children into Year 5 in what is quite a big change for them. We are very much looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year brings us!

Wishing you all a very restful half term.

Year 6 – Mrs Allen, Mr Kay, Dr Moradi

This Week in Year 6…

And just like that, we’ve come to the end of the first half term!

It has been another fun-filled week in Year 6, with exciting fixtures, fantastic lessons, and plenty of thought-provoking form time discussions. We also completed our Black History Month challenge, and our Year 6 area is now beautifully decorated with informative facts and pictures celebrating Black history and the inspirational people who have shaped it.

As we head into the break, we hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved rest. We know that many pupils have been sitting 11+ exams and attending interviews, and these will continue into the next half term but taking time to relax is just as important to stay motivated and happy. We are incredibly proud of Year 6 and how they have conducted themselves throughout this first half term. We look forward to everything that lies ahead next half term!

Senior News

The Seniors were set the challenge of earning 250 House Points this Half Term, with the incentive of a reward trip!   Well, the collective certainly rose to the occasion; they made it their mission to earn House Points across the board, and by Week 5 had reached 290!  So, Mr Russell and I took them to Ninja Warrior yesterday for their well earnt reward.  Spirits were high and camaraderie was rife.  Well done, Seniors!

Academic News

This week, I have enlisted the help of some star writers as they view and review the Year 5 showcase…

Daniel L

An astounding event took place last night with songs, dancing, acapella singing and various instruments being played. The show was named Songs and Sounds of the World and all of the open-mouthed parents loved watching their passionate and delighted children. All of the children showcased confidence and expertise whilst performing. Mrs Allen and Mr Evans organised the show and said they’re “very proud of all of the pupils for putting the show together in 5 weeks.” It was clear that everybody loved it!

Isabelle C

Last night’s show, “Songs And Sounds of the World” was the highlight of the year for some of Year 5. It was all laughter and positivity, no doubt about it, they all worked extremely hard on this musical in such a short amount of time! They couldn’t hold in their smiles on the finale, “Edge Grove Mambo”.  It was the best section of the show and some of the audience even joined in! Year 5 even want to do the show again! The soloists did an amazing job in “Hey Dumba” and the audience didn’t want it to stop! It was a magical journey for all of us: the girls dancing to “Jai Ho”, and the boys singing “Sin Jai”, and the magical music from “Mulan” performed by 5R! Wyatt’s piano and Daniel’s saxophone solos were pure bliss. Year 5 has amazing talent – it is definitely a night to remember.

Ava C

On Thursday 16th of October 2025 Year 5 performed a delightful showcase called Song and Sounds of the World. Year 5 did a fabulous job and some special shout outs go to Wyatt Wang & Daniel Lynch for their amazing acts on their musical instruments. The parents were astonished by the children’s skills of dancing, singing and playing of drums, and were amazed by little children age 9-10 who put on a show in less than six weeks. People should thank Mrs Allen & Mr Evans for putting on an incredible show, and the children were fantastic. Also special thanks to all the people who helped back stage! Year 5 was so good that I think they almost blew the roof off! They were great. I swear some parents went home with big smiles on their faces.

Wolf K

The year 5 show was the best showcase that the parents have ever seen. The show was called Songs and Sounds of the World. A special shout out to Kwabena and Iyanu for their acapella singing which was at the end of the ‘Hey Dumba’. Parents thought that it was one of the best performances that they had ever seen and they couldn’t believe that the children had only been practising the show for only five weeks.

The highlight was the Edge Grove Mambo which showed the energy and enthusiasm of all the children. Backstage, in the soundbox, was Mr Evans who was playing piano and doing the lights, and Mrs Allen put together this excellent showcase. Edge Grove has helped all the children flourish and grow. We highly recommend this school.

Teddy W

Last night Edge Grove put on surely the best show they’ve ever done. The show was called Songs and Sounds of the World and it was brilliant. This incredible showcase was a celebration of songs from around the world, such as Brazil and Africa, and the parents thought that it was spectacular. The children performed amazingly, but the highlight was definitely The Edge Grove Mambo. It was absolutely flawless, and was performed by every child and they loved it. They were so energetic the whole way through, but you can’t forget about the solos. One was a saxophone solo performed by Daniel and the other was an excellent piano solo by Wyatt. But all of our thanks goes to Mrs Allen and Mr Evans, for organising the whole thing. Overall I thought it was an outstanding show and it was definitely worth watching.

Seb O

The parents were amazed by the power and the energy of the students. The crowd was blown away by the children on the stage. The power of their words was incredible – they brought the stage to life with their acting , dancing and instruments. There were two solos and they were amazing. One of them was Bare Necessities on the saxophone and the other one was on the piano.

Some of the songs were Hey Dumba , I Will Make a Man Out of You, Si Nje Nje , Jai Ho, and the grand finale was the Edge Grove Mambo. It was a night to remember!

Performing Arts (Drama and Music) News

What a Week! What a joyous, busy, and bright week it’s been in Performing Arts! A true celebration of creativity, community, and harvest

Harvest Festival:

Our Harvest Festival was a blend of gratitude, harmony, and hope. The chorus choir’s stunning rendition of Amarillo Sky filled the Apthorp Hall, and drama ignite fellows brought their poems alive with expression and flair.

Year 5 Showcase – Songs + Sounds of the World:

Year 5 absolutely blew everyone away with their dress rehearsal performances.

In just five weeks – a new record! pupils rehearsed and perfected an entire showcase that celebrates songs and sounds from around the world.

From singing in different languages to playing instruments, keeping pulse and rhythms, and performing choreographed dances, every moment radiated talent and teamwork.

A showcase to remember!

Bugsy Malone Recalls:

Tuesday evening’s Bugsy Malone recalls were a sheer delight! The auditions were nothing short of exceptional and it was hard to believe these confident, creative performances came from Prep school pupils. Each student brought their own flair and individuality to their character, showing impressive levels of preparation and imagination.

We were left feeling elated and proud, though now face some very tricky casting decisions! The official cast list will be announced at our first rehearsal scheduled for after half-term.

We can already tell this production is going to be something truly special.

Drama Ignite: A Visit from Christian Stevens:

This week, we were thrilled to welcome back Christian Stevens, a former Edge Grove pupil and now a rising actor and filmmaker. Christian, alongside his colleague Nick, a professional sound recordist, joined our Drama Ignite session for an inspiring Q&A about the world of acting and film.

They shared fascinating insights into the realities of the film industry and the creative process behind bringing stories to life on screen. Christian also returned to gather some final footage for his upcoming film God of Mischief, a project he began filming right here at Edge Grove over the summer.

It was a proud and exciting moment to see a former pupil return as a professional actor, giving our students a glimpse into where their own creative journeys might lead.

A Fantastic Finale:

As we reach the end of this half term, we celebrate a week that has been as fulfilling as it has been fun. We couldn’t be prouder of the creativity, courage, and collaboration shown by all our students.

Here’s to a well-earned rest and to more magic next term! (dare we say it… Christmas term!)

Mrs Allen Mr Evans

House News

This week has been amazing from beginning to end, with LAMDA Platforms, the Harvest Festival, House Assemblies, Year 5’s Showcase AND Cross Country. It’s been so much fun, and completely exhausting.

A huge thank you to all of our students and parents who donated food for our Harvest celebration. Mrs Doughty and our Head Boys, Isaac and Bolu, lugged the lot down to an incredibly grateful WD6 Foodbank this morning. Thank you all for being so kind and generous.

Moreover, we’ve been tackling our food waste in school with a House Competition to encourage reducing the amount we throw away. The House with the least amount of food waste receives the most points! I’m still weighing the food (has anyone seen my rubber gloves) but I’ll let you know the results after half term. It’s like that scene from Star Wars in here… you know the one.

Our House Assemblies on Thursday were an opportunity to get creative and design the new Edge Grove Christmas Card. A huge thank you to Mrs Turner for organising the competition; we saw some amazing artistry on display.

At the time of writing, I do not yet know the results of the Cross Country, but I’m predicting mud, sweat, and tears… from Mr Aitchison, I don’t know about the children… I’m sure it will be an incredibly successful event.

With the business of this week, I have decided to rollover the Joke of the Week and Photo of the Week competitions to after half term, but I’ll leave you with one of my personal favourite jokes…

Did you know that the urge to sing the song “In the Jungle” is only ever a whim away?

Have a restful half term.

Mr Evans
Head of Houses
Director of Music

Sports News

What a fantastic first half of term we’ve had in the Sports Department!

We’ve played an incredible 48 fixtures so far, with numerous teams representing the school at each event. Highlights this half-term have included participation in the U11 IAPS Hockey, where we proudly finished 3rd in the Bowl, the ISFA Football, and the U13 IAPS Football, among others.

We’ve also been very fortunate with the weather, which has allowed us to continue swimming during PE lessons with pupils from Year 3 up to Seniors. While our older students have been busy competing in matches, our Nursery pupils have just begun their sporting journeys. They’ve been focusing on Fundamental Movements and have now progressed to developing their Sending and Receiving skills.

We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved and restful half-term break. We look forward to welcoming you back in two weeks, ready for another exciting half-term of sport!

Match Reports

Friday 10th October

3rd Place in Bowl

Our Colts A Hockey team had an action-packed and rewarding day at the IAPS tournament hosted by Haileybury on Friday. Placed in a tough pool alongside St. Cedd’s, Dame Bradbury’s, Bancroft’s, and Danes Hill, the team showed great determination and spirit to battle through to the Bowl competition.
In the Bowl stage, we faced St. Faith’s and Alleyn’s School, putting in strong performances across the board. Highlights included excellent defensive work during short corners, with Captain Asayoma leading from the front by charging down the taker, Aria making some superb saves in goal, and Ayomipo clearing the ball with composure and confidence.
We finished 3rd in the Bowl, a fantastic achievement and a testament to the team’s growth, effort, and teamwork throughout the day. We’re excited to bring everything we’ve learned back into training as we continue to build and improve.

Colts A Hockey vs Beechwood Park

Edge Grove 0-0 Beechwood Park B

Edge Grove 3-3 Beechwood Park C

It was a fantastic afternoon of hockey for the Colts A team as they took on Beechwood Park’s B and C sides.
In our first game, the defence was rock solid — clearing every ball wide with confidence and precision. Ariya made several excellent saves to keep us in control, while Freya took quick and accurate hits out to Seb and Lily, setting the team up for strong attacking plays.
Moving into the second game, our attacking line switched to Iyanu and Seb, who worked brilliantly together to produce three superb goals. The team adapted seamlessly to the change in formation, showing great teamwork and determination throughout. It was a brilliant all-round performance with strong defending, sharp attacking, and excellent communication across the pitch. The Colts A team remains undefeated on match days, and this afternoon’s results were a testament to their hard work and teamwork.
Well done, Colts A!

Colts B Hockey vs Beechwood Park

The Colts B hockey team enjoyed a fantastic and fun training session with Beechwood Park this week. It was a great opportunity for the players to both compete against and team up with Beechwood, creating a lively and collaborative atmosphere on the pitch.

There were some brilliant attacking moments, particularly from Sienna and Olivia, who showed great skill and determination going forward. At the back, Leila put in an outstanding defensive performance, helping to keep things solid under pressure.

Everyone worked hard throughout, showing great team spirit and energy. A really enjoyable session all round – well done, Colts B!

Colts A Football Triangular Festival

Edge Grove 0-1 Westbrook Hay

Edge Grove 2-1 Orley Farm

The Edge Grove Colts A team travelled to Orley Farm on Wednesday for a challenging triangular festival, facing Westbrook Hay and the host school. Despite missing several key players, the squad showed immense determination and team spirit to produce a superb afternoon of football.

Match 1: Edge Grove vs. Westbrook Hay (0-1)

The Colts A started their campaign against Westbrook Hay, a side that had defeated them convincingly just a few weeks prior. Knowing they had a point to prove, the team started the game with ferocious competitiveness.

The defensive spine was immense: Raf and Harry were tireless and tenacious in their tackling, shutting down many attacks. Leading from the front, Tyler demonstrated outstanding leadership, expertly organising the team’s shape and keeping the structure tight. A welcome returnee, Louis proved immediately resolute in his defensive duties. Meanwhile, Edith was a constant threat, offering excellent width and pace, turning defence into attack throughout the match.

Up front, Jack led the line brilliantly, serving as the essential out-ball for the team and providing fantastic hold-up play to bring others into the game. The last line of defence in the team was Teddy, who continued his fine form in goal with strong, acrobatic reaction saves and excellent distribution that kept the play moving quickly.

It was a tightly contested affair, but after a sustained period of pressure, Westbrook Hay managed to break the deadlock and take the lead. The Colts A’s rallied in the second half, creating several golden opportunities with both Edith and Jack going agonisingly close. Though the equaliser wasn’t found, the team’s much-improved performance was a huge positive to carry into the next match.

Match 2: Edge Grove vs. Orley Farm (2-1)

The second match saw the Colts A quickly find their stride and dictate the flow of the game. The team successfully identified and exploited a weakness in the opposition’s defensive shape.

Tyler was pivotal in midfield, smartly finding Edith and Louis out wide time and again. The wingers delivered a barrage of testing shots towards the Orley keeper while simultaneously slipping excellent through-balls to Jack. Tyler himself broke the deadlock before half-time, displaying magnificent “twinkle toes” to dance past three defenders before rifling the ball into the top corner—a truly sensational goal.

The Colts doubled their lead in the second half thanks to great teamwork. Louis’s aggressive pressing won the ball back high up the pitch, and he quickly fed Jack, who clinically dispatched the team’s second goal. Despite a late consolation goal from Orley Farm, the Edge Grove team stayed disciplined and focused, hanging on for a superb 2-1 victory.

This was a superb effort from everyone involved, showcasing resilience, tactical awareness, and fantastic individual skill against tough opposition. Well done, Colts A!

Colts B Football v Orley Farm

The Colts B Team travelled to Orley Farm on Wednesday for a triangular fixture against Orley Farm and Westbrook Hay. Spirits were high as the team approached their first match with great energy and determination.

In the opening game against Orley Farm, Edge Grove started positively and played some excellent football, showing real teamwork and commitment throughout. Despite a strong performance, a couple of unfortunate goals saw Orley Farm take a 2–0 win. Oscar worked tirelessly in goal, while Aiwanehi was superb at centre defence, he read the game brilliantly, making crucial tackles, and driving the team forward from the back.

The second match against Westbrook Hay proved a tougher challenge. An early goal from the opposition put Edge Grove on the back foot, and despite their best efforts, the boys found it difficult to regain their momentum. Kwabena, stepping up from the C Team, delivered a sterling performance at left-back, showing real composure and effort. Once again, Aiwanehi led by example with constant communication and commitment. Harry showed excellent leadership and perseverance up front, keeping his teammates motivated until the final whistle.

Although results didn’t go our way, the team should take pride in their effort, teamwork, and continued improvement. Each game is another step forward in their development, and the spirit shown throughout the afternoon was a real credit to them.

Colts C Football v Orley Farm

On a challenging afternoon, the Edge Grove Colts C squad travelled to Orley Farm to take part in a head-to-head fixture. While the final score was a tough 1-6 defeat, the team demonstrated immense resilience, fortitude, and the true Edge Grove spirit throughout the match.

A Strong Start and Defensive Fortitude

The team started strongly, matching Orley Farm’s energy and commitment across the pitch. Our defence was marshalled superbly, with Daniel proving to be a resolute anchor. He showed real resilience and was tenacious and uncompromising in every single tackle, constantly shutting down opposition attacks.

In the first half, Luke played a vital role in goal, keeping Edge Grove in the game with a string of outstanding saves. His commitment to the team was clear, and he demonstrated the Edge Grove spirit of teamwork and empathy throughout, acting as a genuine role model.

Midfield Engine and Attacking Threat

The midfield was a hive of activity, driven by several impressive individual performances:

  • Josh was a standout, impressing coaches with his strength on the ball and intelligent positioning. His ability to run the length of the pitch at will, contributing equally in both attack and defence, was exceptional and provided energy across the field.
  • Kwabena showed great promise in the first half, using his strength on the ball to full effect and showcasing excellent dribbling skills to break through the lines.
  • Wolf ran tirelessly, displaying rapid acceleration. His speed and excellent dribbling skills saw him break through the defensive line and get through on goal several times, testing the Orley Farm goalkeeper.

The team’s relentless effort paid off with an excellent goal, a well-deserved moment of quality. Tippi showed great skill and enthusiasm throughout the match, committed fully to both tackles and attack. Her efforts were rewarded when she finished off a superb move that involved brilliant build-up play from both Josh and Luke.

The team continued to fight hard in the second half. Chris took over in goal and immediately impressed, making several excellent saves and showcasing his composure by distributing the ball well to restart our attacks.

Ultimately, while the result didn’t go our way, every member of the Colts C team can be proud of their commitment.

They fought for every ball, adapted to the pressure, and demonstrated excellent resilience and fortitude against a strong opponent.

Colts D Football vs Aldwickbury

Edge Grove 2-1 Aldwickbury (First game)

Edge Grove 3-5 Aldwickbury (Second game)

Today, Edge Grove travelled to Aldwickbury for an exciting fixture. The Colts D team started with real intensity and teamwork. Chimdi, Itai, and Hamza combined brilliantly in attack, with Chimdi providing an excellent pass for Itai, who showed great determination to score twice. In defence, Lucy and Rayan worked tirelessly, while Kevin made several key saves in goal, conceding only once. The first match finished 2–1 to Edge Grove, a fantastic result in their opening game.

In the second game, Aldwickbury fielded a fresh team who came out strongly and scored some early goals. Hamza produced a fantastic solo attack, chasing down a through ball and taking on the goalkeeper one-on-one to score. Itai also worked well again with Chimdi, who provided two excellent assists for his goals. Although Edge Grove lost their second match, the team showed great determination and effort right up until the final whistle. Moving forward, the players will focus on moving the ball wide into space and communicating more effectively as a team.

Thursday 16th October

Edge Grove vs York House

Miss Evans’ Team 6-0 York House

Miss Evans’ U8 team faced a new challenge this week with smaller pitches, meaning tighter spaces and a greater need for skill and quick thinking. The first half was goalless, with both sides struggling to break through.

In the second half, Edge Grove began to find space out wide. A great cross from Lara set up Isabella for the first goal. Lara then added two more herself with some impressive attacking play.

Darcy and Gabriella were strong at the back, but both also pushed forward, Gabriella scoring a well-taken goal, and Darcy adding her own soon after. Elizabeth was solid in tackles and was rewarded with a goal too.

A fantastic team performance, well done to all the girls!

Year 3 House Football Competition

What an incredible afternoon of football! Our Year 3 and 4 boys took to the pitches with enthusiasm, teamwork, and house pride as they represented Gills, Churchills, Sarnesfield, Hedgerows, and Stratton in this term’s Inter-House Football Competition.

From the very first whistle, the standard of play was superb, full of energy, determination, and fantastic sportsmanship. Every match showcased the boys’ developing understanding of teamwork, positioning, and communication, with plenty of goals, saves, and celebrations along the way.

While there were too many standout moments and impressive players to mention, special recognition goes to Max Vasani and Nathaniel Shtrosberg, who both showed exceptional sportsmanship by stepping in to play for other teams, ensuring that every pupil could take part and enjoy the experience.

Inter-House competitions are not just about winning, they are about participation, teamwork, and growth. The boys demonstrated exactly that spirit throughout the afternoon, supporting one another and showing what it truly means to be part of the Edge Grove community.

A huge well done to everyone involved for making it such a positive and enjoyable event!

Year 4 House Football Competition

Houses Competing: Stratton, Sarnesfield, Hedgerows, Gills, and Churchills

The atmosphere was electric as the Year 4 Houses took to the pitch for a truly high-energy football competition. This year’s format—where every team played each other twice—proved highly valuable, allowing teams to discuss tactics, apply them in the second meeting, and deliver instant adjustments to great effect. The afternoon was filled with incredible tackling, sharp passing, and some truly exceptional dribbling displays across the board.

Sarnesfield’s Early Momentum

Sarnesfield started the tournament like a force of nature, securing four consecutive wins and building critical momentum. Their early success was built on having many attacking and defensive options at their disposal, making them difficult to contain.

However, the second round saw the competition adapt brilliantly. The other Houses stepped up their collective game, forcing Sarnesfield to fight hard and resulting in two crucial draws in their final matches. Despite this late pressure, Sarnesfield’s early success and overall strength secured them the top spot.

The True Spirit of Competition

While Sarnesfield earned the trophy, the afternoon was defined by the incredible grit, tenacity, and House spirit shown by every competitor:

  • Hedgerows rebounded strongly after an opening defeat. Crucially, they started with only four core players, yet showed such true grit that they fought their way back into the competition. In a brilliant display of House spirit, other Houses generously contributed a player to Hedgerows for each match, ensuring they matched up evenly and demonstrated amazing sportsmanship.
  • The combined Churchills and Gills side showed true guts and resilience, defending and attacking with all of their energy throughout the competition. Their ability to combine forces and maintain high intensity for the duration was commendable.
  • Stratton played with plenty of heart, throwing themselves around the pitch throughout the competition. Their unwavering effort and enthusiasm were evident in every challenge.

Final Finishing Positions

The competition was a tight race, showcasing the Year 4 pupils’ development of skill and teamwork. The eventual champions were Sarnesfield, securing 1st place with their early dominance. They were followed closely by the determined Hedgerows in 2nd place, whose tenacity was a highlight of the day. Sharing a deserved 3rd place were the resilient combined side of Churchills and Gills, with the committed Stratton rounding out the competition in 5th place.

It was, without a doubt, a great fun afternoon that celebrated skill, resilience, and incredible moments of sportsmanship!

Tooled Up

This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day is access to care during catastrophes and emergencies.

At Tooled Up, this prompted us to reflect that whilst global events like natural disasters, wars or shootings may be far away, they can still affect our own and children’s mental health due to the exposure we have to social media.

With graphic content spreading quickly on social media, it’s important to ensure that children (of all ages) are not being exposed to disturbing content, especially on platforms like WhatsApp where large group chats and easily shared videos can expose them to harmful content around the clock. Watch this video WhatsApp and Young Children: What Parents Need to Know to find out do’s and don’ts to keep your child safe.

Your child may question your own use of WhatsApp so be prepared to reflect on this. Do all the group chats you are a member of support your wellbeing or do they add stress or increase FOMO? Our resource 10 Reasons to Be Mindful When Using Parent WhatsApp Groups includes helpful guidelines for your own use.

Some families use parental controls to help ensure their children do not view damaging content online but do they really work? Dr Mariya Stoilova Discusses the Pros and Cons of Parental Controls sharing practical tips about the tools on offer including their limitations, differing uses and functions.

This Mental Health Day let’s stay attuned to the many supportive tools that can help children navigate a world where the boundaries of on and offline experiences are blurred. Honest family conversations, consistent, shared digital values and reassurance that we’re always there for them no matter what, will go a very long way.
