What do you need to do?
We would like you to send us a short video of your child engaging with a familiar adult. We are looking for the video to demonstrate your child’s development of the milestones listed above. We suggest that it includes the following:
- Demonstrating their speech and language and communication skills – your child could be listening to an extract from their favourite story and engaging with questions posed by an adult.
- Playing purposefully – your child should demonstrate being engaged in creative play with their favourite toy; known in nursery as small world play, this might be playing with dinosaurs, a train track or shop.
- Demonstrating fine motor skills – your child could be playing with DUPLO, stickle bricks, threading or play dough
- Demonstrating gross motor skills – your child could be playing freely in an open space such as a garden, park or woodland – running, jumping or climbing
The video should be no longer than ten minutes and it may comprise short clips from each of the tasks (we know that reading a whole story can take ten minutes alone!). If it’s easier to film these separately, you can send us a maximum of four shorter clips.
Please note that the videos will be saved on our secure internal network and will only be viewed by the staff involved in our 4+ Assessment. All videos will be deleted after the assessment.
How do we send you the video?
Please send the video via WeTransfer to admissions@edgegrove.com
WeTransfer is a free and simple way to transfer files. Please ensure the file is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Please note that the transfer of your child’s sensitive data (i.e. video) is your responsibility and therefore if you do not wish to use this service we can accept smaller videos emailed to admissions@edgegrove.com. Please ensure all files are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
How will you make your selection?
We are in the fortunate position that more people apply than we have places for and therefore we are gently selective. We have 43 pupils in our Pre-School and, although a few will leave due to unforeseen circumstances, we expect most to move seamlessly into Reception, leaving an opportunity for approximately 17-20 new children to join our school community in September 2021.
In addition to using the milestones as a guide during assessment, our decision will be based on various factors including maintaining a gender balance.
We will contact your child’s Nursery (if applicable) for their confidential feedback and review this as part of our assessment of your child.
When will we hear your decision?
We will inform you if your child has been shortlisted within 1-2 weeks of submitting your video.
We will then invite parents of our shortlisted applicants to an individual Zoom call with either our Head (Miss McDonald) or Head of Pre Prep (Mrs Emmerson). This ‘virtual meeting’ is an opportunity for us to get to know a little more about your family and educational aspirations for your child.
Following these calls, we will make our final selection and write to parents with the outcome of the assessment.
What happens if my child is offered a place?
We will ask you to accept the place by signing our acceptance form and paying a £2000 deposit. We will give you two weeks to make your decision. Click here for more information.
Can we have any feedback on our application?
Unfortunately, due to the high number of applicants we are assessing we are unable to provide feedback following the assessment process.
